How to save money for your trip?

To know how to save a lot of money for your upcoming trip we should make a little, okay I’m lying pretty big research. We will read a lot of blogs from other people traveling and giving advice. Let’s break this research in 3 sections whose will be these and let’s do lists for every section:

  • Save money before a trip
  • Save money during a trip
  • Recover money from a trip

Save money before a trip

1. Plan your budget

Blogs I used for research:

This is probably one of the most obvious tips before you start saving for your trip you should plan how much you need to save. Plan how much you will need for flights, hotels, preparation(inventory you will need), food and everything else. My own advice would be after you calculate how much you will need for a trip is to save 1.5 of it just to have additional money. So if you planned that your trip will cost 1000€, have 1500€. This additional money will save you from unplanned situations. Another advice would be to download an app to track your savings easier, you can find a few of them here on LifeWire.

2. Track your spending

Blogs I used for research:

You should already know that tracking your spending is crucial to saving money. By doing simple math you can calculate how much money you could if you wouldn’t do a lot of things, like smoking, drinking or spending on Netflix subscription or anything else. Let’s do quick math:

I used to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day and it costs about 3.60€ on average in my country so that is about 100€ in a month and over 1200€ in a year. Can you believe it? You can save 1200€ a year just by quitting smoking.

Another example would be with drinking. I used to go to parties pretty often and you know what? I loosed a lot of money in them, most of the times my wallet was empty after parties, I used to spend 50-60€ in one weekend. Just imagine that is about 200€ a month or 2400€ a year, of course, you are not going to parties every weekend but you got an image. You can save a lot!

Also, another example is canceling your subscriptions of services you are not using or that are not important too much, like Netflix subscription. A premium plan of Netflix charges 12€ every month, so that is 144€ annually. Now that is only an example, maybe you have another subscription that charges you a lot of money. You can see to how much it can add up, so take a look at your subscriptions and cancel these you are not needing.

3. Increase your income

Blog I used for research:

This is pretty straightforward, if your income is bigger you will save for your trip a lot easier. There are lot of ways to increase your income and only imagination can limit you at this. One of the tips would be, if you have a lot of free time and you are creative you should try freelancing. Freelancing is one of the best ways to grow your income, of course, it is a time-consuming activity, but after investing some time to it, you can get a pretty decent income. These are few websites for freelancing you could try: Freelancer, Fiverr, Guru.

What I noticed while searching how to grow your income, that very few blogs offer a salary negotiation as income grow tool. That is strange because as Joker in Dark Knight said: if you are good at something, never do it for free. Salary negotiations are one of the best ways to increase your income because just by adding a 100€ to your salary a month, you are getting 1200€ more a year. But be prepared before salary negotiation, show your company why they should increase your salary, show how you have improved recently and why they should increase your salary.

Sell stuff you don’t need anymore, it may be an old computer, old clothes or anything else. If you are not using something anymore, maybe someone else will find an use to it. Collect all stuff you don’t need head up to eBay and sell your stuff. This will add up to a pretty good sum and you will clean your room, garage or closet.

Save money while you are traveling

1. Carry your own food and drinks

Blogs I used for research:

Without being aware of your spends on drinks and food it will quickly add up and you will spend a lot of money. If you are able, cook your own food, if you are able to fill bottles of water in your hotel. Just do whatever you can to avoid buying food and drinks in shops. This is a mistake a lot of travelers do, even bigger mistake is buying food in “international” restaurants which offer exotic food. If you want to try exotic food, at least try to stay away from tourist centers, because prices there are sky-high.

2. Do more research about places you are going to visit

Blogs I used for research:

You should do a lot of research about places you are going to visit because sometimes museums offer free entries, there might be many more objects you could visit in same city or area, there could be a lot more things to do there. This will not only save your money, but it will also save you time too. Never visit a place just for one or two objects, they could offer you much more.

3. Don’t travel alone

You can save a lot of money by traveling in a group. If you will need to rent a hotel or house, you will share your expenses. Sometimes museums and places like that give discounts for bigger groups of visitors. Take advantage of this. While traveling in a group you can negotiate on practically everything, just have at least one buddy who will be super communicable. There is a ton of advantages besides that, you just need to use your imagination.

4. Use as many discounts as you can find

If you are a student, take advantage of this. There are a lot of discounts for students in ISIC program, you can find discounts from hotels to museums. Use official ISIC website to find discounts here: ISIC discounts

Contact the administration of hotels, museums and other places you are going to visit, ask them for a discount, tell them you are going to visit an object in a group. Most of the time they will offer you unofficial discounts, at least you will get all the information about prices and official discounts.

If you are a senior, you have an advantage too. Some airlines, hotels, museums and other companies will give you discounts. Just carry your id with you everywhere you go.

Use special museum passes, like Paris have one. Paris museum pass lets you visit almost all the museums in Paris. You will save a lot of money if you have one and you will get additional perks, like an ability to skip the ticket line.

Recover money after traveling

1. Sell your photos on the internet

There are tons of websites on which you can sell your photos which you made on a trip. Bloggers and other creators are buying high-quality photos for their blogs and websites. Some of the most profitable online photo marketplaces are Shutterstock, Alamy, Photoshelter, Dreamstime.

2. Run your own blog and monetize it

You could run your own blog and monetize it. Tell people about your trips, share your experience. Make reviews for hotels, museums you have been, in a long term you could even get offers from travel agencies to make a review for their places, you could even get free tickets, free travels and special discounts for that.
